Religious Leaders and Civil Society Representatives Urge Due Process, Transparency, and Respect for International Human Rights Standards

INTERNATIONAL: A press conference on Human Rights and Judicial Justice was held in New Delhi, where human rights advocates, religious leaders, and members of civil society called for judicial fairness, transparency, and adherence to internationally recognized human rights standards in relation to the detention of 95-year-old peace advocate and Shincheonji Church of Jesus Chairman Lee Man-hee.
Speakers emphasized that the issue extends beyond a single individual and raises broader concerns about judicial independence, religious freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law. They urged the concerned authorities to ensure that all legal and administrative proceedings are conducted impartially, transparently, and solely on the basis of verifiable evidence.
Atul David, President of the National Human Rights Liberties Social Justice, highlighted the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners (Mandela Rules), stating that every detainee deserves to be treated with dignity and provided appropriate medical care. He stressed that allegations of arbitrary detention, religious discrimination, or violations of due process must be examined fairly and in accordance with international human rights principles.
Agnes Philip, Public Relations Officer of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC), raised humanitarian concerns regarding Chairman Lee’s continued detention, noting his advanced age and reported fragile health. She said that humanitarian considerations should be taken into account throughout the legal process and also urged the media to report the matter responsibly, based on verified facts and balanced reporting.
Christian leader Prateek Emmanuel stated that legal proceedings involving any religious leader should remain impartial, transparent, and firmly grounded in the rule of law. He emphasized that every individual, regardless of religious affiliation, deserves equal protection and respect for their fundamental rights.
Representatives from India’s interfaith community echoed the importance of protecting religious freedom, safeguarding the rights of minorities, and ensuring equal justice for all. They noted that democratic societies have a responsibility to uphold constitutional values while honoring internationally recognized human rights commitments.
Concluding the press conference, participants jointly appealed to the relevant authorities to conduct all judicial proceedings fairly, transparently, and strictly on the basis of objective evidence. They also called for appropriate humanitarian consideration in light of Chairman Lee Man-hee’s advanced age and health condition.
The speakers concluded that the manner in which such cases are handled reflects a nation’s commitment to judicial fairness, the rule of law, religious freedom, and the protection of universally recognized human rights.
